Identification

Usually distinctive. Care required, potential confusion with Common Footman and Dingy Footman.

Attracted to light.

Life cycle

One generation. Overwinters as a small larva.  Larvae September to late June. Pupates in a cocoon formed in a bark crevice.

Larval foodplants

Lichens and algae growing on trees and shrubs.

Habitat

Mainly established broadleaved woodland but also scrub and heathland.

History 

The first record for D&G was on 30th July 2006 at Forest Moor, Wigtownshire, with another there in August of the same year. Two were caught at Auchencairn (VC73) in 2008, with another seven trapped at Old Torr, on the other side of Auchencairn Bay in 2010.

In between, one was caught in July, 2009, and nine in mid-August, 2010, at Carsluith (VC73). Another was caught in 2009 at Kirkmabreck, with one in Kirroughtree Forest on 28th August 2010. Now widespread and well established in the region.
