Resident, rare, local. Widely, but thinly, distributed in England and Wales. Few, scattered records in Scotland to Caithness. Shows a severe, long-term decrease in its distribution.

Identification

As with most pugs a specimen or good quality photo required for record acceptance.

Recording method

Comes to light in small numbers.

Life cycle

Two generations. Overwinters as a pupa. Larvae are from mid-June to late July and for the second generation late August and September.

Larval foodplants

Larvae feed on Ash and buckthorn.

Habitat

Woodland, hedgerows and parkland.

History

First recorded for Dumfries and Galloway in 1862 for VC73 at Dalskairth by Lennon, in 1940 for VC72 at Kilmahoe by Duncan but not until 2014 for VC74 at Leswalt by Valerie Harrison.
