Recording method

Flies in the afternoon and occasionally comes to light.  Larval emergence hole in twig is capped with red-brown frass during March-April.

Life cycle

Larvae October-April, adults May-June.

Larval foodplants

Birch species, preferring young trees, in a spherical swelling on a twig, usually at a node.

History

The first for Dumfries & Galloway was found at Torrs Warren, Wigtownshire, during the period 1977-89.
