Adult: 2
Resident, scarce, widespread. Widespread in mainland Britain in wet woodlands. Widespread but scattered in Scotland including the islands. Its distribution has increased significantly since 1970.

Identification

Care required to separate from other ‘Highflyers.’ The lack of reddish on the forewing should separate from Ruddy Highflyer.

Recording method

Occasionally found by day on tree trunks and comes to light.

Life cycle

One generation. Overwinters as a pupa. Larvae are present July to September.

Larval foodplants

Alder.

Habitat

Damp woodland.

History

First recorded for Dumfries ad Galloway in VC72 near Dumfries by Lennon who stated it was ‘very common’,  in V$ in 1905 at Corsemalzie by Gordon who found it ‘scarce on tree trunks and after beating’ and for VC73 in 1942 near Gatehouse of Fleet by Russell.
