Resident, very common, widespread. Abundant and widespread throughout Britain.

Identification

Brownish-white forewings with brown cross band, and relatively plain underwing are key features.

Life cycle

One generation. Overwinters as a larva during July to May. Pupates in a cocoon in soft earth.

Larval foodplants

Larvae feed on range of herbaceous plants, including bedstraws.

Habitat

Scrub, grassland and various other habitats.

History

First recorded for Dumfries and Galloway for VC72 at Raehills, south of Beattock by Little, for VC74 in 1899 near Monreith by Morton and for VC73 in 1942 near Gatehouse by Russell.
