Resident, scarce, local. Widespread in England and Wales. Limited in Scotland to scattered records from Dumfries and Galloway and parts of the Central Belt.

Life cycle

One generation. Overwinters as a pupa. Larvae present late June to late August.

Larval foodplants

Blackthorn and hawthorns.

Habitat

Woodland, gardens, hedgerows and scrub.

History

First recorded for Dumfries and Galloway as recently as 1997 for VC73 in Cally Woods, Gatehouse by Peter Norman, in 2006 for VC74 at Forest Moor by  A W Ewing, and in 2009 for VC72 at Caerlaverock by Richard Mearns.
