Identification

Usually distinctive. Sexually dimorphic.

Recording Method

Attracted to light. Male nocturnal and attracted to light.  Female flies by day.

Life cycle

One generation. Overwinters as a pupa. Larvae mid June to early September. Pupates amongst plant debris.

Larval foodplants

Many herbaceous plants, including docks, plantains and Red Dead-nettle.

Habitat

Many open habitats including open woodland, sand dunes, gardens and hedgerows.

History

The first record for D&G was one at Bankend (VC72) in May 2019. Further records in 2013 at Kirkconnel Flow and Blackcraig (VC73) and Annan (VC72).
