Flies in sunshine, males often swarming around the tops of trees and bushes.

Life cycle

Larvae May-March, Adults March-May.

Larval foodplants

Willow catkins, then dead willow leaves on the ground.

History

The first for Dumfries & Galloway was found at Auchenfad, Kirkcudbrighthsire, on 19th April 1982 by Sir Arthur Duncan, specimen now at National Museums Scotland, while the first for Dumfriesshire was found at Locharbriggs on 26th April 1982, again by Sir Arthur Duncan, with the specimen at National Museums Scotland.
