Vine's Rustic

The first record for D&G (and Scotland) was one trapped at Kirkton, near Dumfries (VC72) on 26 September 2023.

Identification

Care required to separate from Uncertain and Rustic. The forewing is pale to dark brownish grey with pale grey dusting and a straight leading edge. Markings similar to Uncertain and Rustic but with a usually faint central band and a larger and more rounded kidney mark and oval. Hindwing is whitish and paler than Rustic.

Recording Method.

Attracted to light, also comes to sugar and flowers.

Life cycle

Two generations. Overwinters as a larva; larvae September to April and  August to September. Pupates in a cocoon underground.

Larval foodplants

A wide range of herbaceous plants including docks, Dandelion and Primrose.

Habitat

Grassland, heathland, woodland rides and weedy places.
