Radford's Flame Shoulder

Migrant. Rare.

 

The first record for D&G (and for Scotland) was one to light at Changue Port, Luce Bay (VC 74) on 6 October 2024. Two more were recorded nearby on 7 October 2024 and a further one at Kirkton (VC 72) on 15 October 2024. These records coincided with large numbers being recorded in southern England.

Identification

Similar to Flame Shoulder but Radford’s Flame Shoulder is larger with longer wings. The stigmata are smaller and the black streak extends well beyond the kidney mark. The clean white hindwing and white dorsal hairs at the top of the abdomen are also useful features.

Recording Method.

Attracted to light.

Life cycle

Recorded in Britain late September to late November. In mainland Europe two generations. Overwinters as a larva and pupates underground. Larvae have not been recorded in Britain.

Larval foodplants

Trefoils and clovers.

Habitat

A wide range of open habitats. British  records are mainly coastal.
