Identification

Usually distinctive. Care required, potential confusion with Common Footman, Buff Footman and Dingy Footman.

Recording Method

Flies from dusk. Attracted to light.

Life cycle

One generation. Overwinters as a pupa. Larvae late May to June. Pupates in a flimsy cocoon amongst lichens.

Larval foodplants

Lichens on oaks, Beech, larches, Blackthorn and other trees.

Habitat

Mature broadleaved woodland, mature dense Blackthorn scrub.

History

The first verified record was three to light on 28 April 2025 at Kilsture Forest (VC74). Recorded there again in 2026 so likely breeding.
